Over 500 PSJA Seniors Honored During 17th Annual PSJA Biliteracy Certification Ceremony and Banquet

PHARR – The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) recognized 521 seniors during the 17th Annual Biliteracy Certification Ceremony and Banquet held April 22-24, 2025, at the Regency Event Center. Each student was individually honored for earning a Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diploma, officially certifying them as Bilingual and Biliterate.

Through PSJA ISD’s nationally recognized Dual Language Enrichment Program, students have the opportunity to master two languages, an invaluable skill that opens doors in today’s global society. PSJA ISD remains the only district in the Rio Grande Valley, and one of the few in Texas, to offer an official Biliteracy Seal on high school diplomas, a distinction highly valued by employers and higher education institutions nationwide.

“Being part of the PSJA Dual Language Program has truly shaped who I am today,” said Emily Flores, a senior at PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM ECHS. “It not only helped me become fluent in two languages but also gave me a deeper understanding of my culture and identity. Thanks to this program, I feel confident and prepared to succeed in college.”

First established in 1995, the PSJA Dual Language Enrichment Program has evolved into a model of excellence, drawing the attention of the US Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency. It continues to foster bilingualism, biliteracy, and cultural appreciation among students from Pre-K 3 through 12th grade.

“At PSJA ISD, we believe that being bilingual and biliterate is a powerful asset in today’s world,” said PSJA Dual Language Enrichment Program Director Olivia Martinez. “This program not only strengthens students’ academic skills but also deepens their cultural awareness and pride. Having over 500 seniors earn their Biliteracy Seal this year is a testament to their hard work and our commitment to language education.”

At PSJA ISD, all Pre-K 3 through 12th-grade students can be part of the PSJA Dual Language Program. PSJA ISD welcomes students from anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley. To learn more or register, visit www.psjaisd.us/whypsja
